Some customers need to analyze their web portals, traffic, pages visited, and sometimes the need arises on an intranet / extranet website and therefore restricted or confidential.
So watch what you do, Google Analytics, which is often the first thing that comes to mind (it is often the client who asks it) is perhaps not really suitable: the Analytics' license implies:
- opening all doors of your content for analysis by Google (which becomes difficult for confidential client data),
- to allow Google to collect, process and store the content (even if these data will not be redistributed to others, Google may make internal use).
See paragraphs 4.2, 8.1, 8.2 and 8.3 of the license http://www.google.com/intl/fr_ALL/analytics/tos_content.html
When the intranet / extranet contains confidential data (which is usually the case), announcing such implications to the client will make it change his mind.
However, there are serious alternatives to Analytics:
- Piwik, free software. Installed locally, has the advantage of being made into plugins, easily customizable.
- FireStats, free for noncommercial use only. It installs locally as well. Seems a more stable progress in its development than Piwik.
- Woopra, paying according to the packages selected, has a very rich interface stats, but works as a remote tool (like Analytics).
Any feedback on this post are welcome.
